The Africa Rice Center (AfricaRice) wishes to employ a highly qualified Research Assistant Rice Value Chain Economist who will be based at Dar‐es‐Salam, Tanzania. This position ishoused in the Multinational‐CGIAR Project on Support to Agricultural Research for development of Strategic Crops in Africa (SARD‐SC), which is funded by the African Development Bank. Responsibilities
The Research Assistant – Rice Value Chain Economist will work under the direct supervision of the Rice Value Chain Expert / AfricaRice in Dar‐es‐Salaam, Tanzania, or his duly assigned representative. S/he will attend to all activities related to rice value chain economy at AfricaRice, working in Program 3 ‘Policy, Innovation Systems and Impact Assessment’. The position is part of a multi‐disciplinary research team working to sustain and improve the productivity of rice‐based systems in Africa in line with AfricaRice’s mission and mandate.
He/she will undertake the following functions:
-        Assist in strategic and applied economics research and support activities aimed at providing a better understanding of the market, institutional and organizational factors favoring or constraining the sustainable development of rice value chains;

-        Attend to the relevant institutional economics, consumer preference and impact assessment research activities;

-        Provide assistance to the development of economic and value chain analysis tools for use by national researchers in Africa through collaboration, networking, provision of technical assistance and training;

-        Management and statistical analysis of research data;

-        Contributing to the preparation of presentations, writing technical reports and other scientific publications in English;

-        Carrying out any other professional duties as needs arise within AfricaRice.
Requirements:
Education: MSc degree in economics or a related field;
Work Experience At least 5 years of experience in agriculture, research and development;working experience / exposure to international organizations and interdisciplinary agricultural research;
Key competencies/abilities required: Working experience in Africa and knowledgeof rice‐based systems are considered important assets; The applicant should be able to take initiatives and work satisfactorily with a minimum supervision in a multicultural setting; the applicant should be prepared for extensive work‐related travel within the research area of AfricaRice.
Language
Fluency in oral and written English, while knowledge of French and/or Swahili are considered important assets;

GCS is undertaking a project dedicated to conceptualizing, designing, and producing a prototype multi-crop threshing machine (human powered) that is suitable for the Tanzanian and East African context. This project will involve an interactive assessment of the assets and needs of the Tanzanian rural communities (around the Arusha area). It will also bring a multi-disciplinary design team together to achieve an effective, reliable, and commercially viable product.

The Multi-Crop Thresher (MCT) is an easy-to-use machine that allows smallholder farmers to thresh the variety of crops produced locally in a fast, modular and affordable way. Compared to traditional methods of threshing that are arduous and time-intensive, the MCT is highly efficient, allowing smallholder farmers to significantly reduce post-harvest loss.

Responsibilities:
This position is required to perform the critical role of being the central person in the design and modeling phase, and key in the phases of prototype fabrication and design-for-manufacturing.

Responsibilities include:
  • Being the main consultant in design and fabrication processes
  • Providing reliable information on existing productivity and previous experiences of similar machines (rice threshers, maize shellers, etc.)
  • Helping troubleshoot any challenges with design functionalities
Requirements:
The ideal candidate is an experienced agricultural engineer, with strong familiarity with appropriate technology models and design methods. S/he is comfortable leading a design team, building 3D CAD models, and communicating design drawings to fabrication technician(s). S/he will also be strongly informed about productivity and functionality of human, pedal powered agricultural machines (threshers, shellers, etc.). This job is offered on a contract basis, for 6 months to one year.

 The requirements for this position are:
  • University-level degree in agricultural or mechanical engineering.
  • Minimum 3 years proven experience in agricultural appropriate technology design in developing regions.
  • Strong technical communication, to translate design decisions into prototype models, and to write the technical parts of the project report.
  • Fluency in English.
Desired Skills:
  • Specific experience with rice threshers and maize shellers.
  • Good knowledge of agricultural conditions and demands of small-scale farmers in Tanzania and East Africa.
  • Fluency in Kiswahili, or being a native of Tanzania or East Africa, is an asset.
  • Familiarity with the Human-Centered Design toolkit.
  • Genuine commitment to the principles of sustainable technology development.

The Position
The Aga Khan Education Service, Tanzania (AKES,T) is part of a global network of 250+ Aga Khan Schools established across East Africa, South and Central Asia. AKES,T is seeking to recruit a Head of Education & Operations to provide leadership and management for its four schools (Nursery schools, Primary School (IBPYP) and Secondary school (IGCSE / IBDP and National Curriculum) in Dar-es Salaam and Mwanza. Program Overview:
Global Cycle Solutions (GCS) is seeking applicants for its 2012/2013 GCS Fellows Program. These positions provide an excellent opportunity for an entrepreneurially minded professional to join a young, vibrant, social enterprise and make a positive impact in the East-African community.
  • The Fellowship is unpaid and will last 6 – 12 months, depending on the Fellow’s schedule and GCS’ needs
  • The Fellowship will be based in Arusha, Tanzania
  • GCS will provide fellows with a volunteer visa, accommodation (food and housing), 1 month of Swahili lessons, phone, 3G internet modem, and a stipend to cover work-related expenses (e.g., airtime, internet, travel) 
  • Each Fellow is responsible for his/her own transportation to/from Tanzania, health insurance, and necessary vaccinations
  • Upon completion of a 12 month commitment, Fellows will be fully reimbursed for personal transportation expenses
