Africa Adaptation Knowledge Network (AAKNet) workshop: Convening Adaptation Knowledge Networks and Platforms in Africa.

Africa is particularly vulnerable to the impacts of climate change. Adaptation is a knowledge-intensive undertaking, and access to relevant and usable knowledge is an important prerequisite for successful adaptation efforts.  Against this backdrop, the Africa Adaptation Knowledge Network facilitated by UNEP under the umbrella of the Global Adaptation Network (GAN) is functioning as a knowledge hub on adaptation, promoting cooperation and collaboration in seeking robust solutions to climate change impacts using experiences and lessons learnt from the implementation of independent actions in different locations. Convening existing adaptation knowledge networks and platforms in Africa opens a window of opportunity for taking stock of the state of adaptation knowledge mobilization on the continent.

CHIEF GEOLOGIST
Reporting to the Technical Services Manager we seek to appoint a Chief Geologist at our Bulyanhulu gold mining operation.
The purpose of this position is to lead the Geology & Diamond Drill department and ensure the systematic collation, validation & interpretation of all relevant geological data and use this to generate & comprehensively document accurate mineral resource estimates for mineralization in and around the Bulyanhulu Gold Mine and to continuously improve personnel, systems & standards with the Geology & Diamond Drill departments.

KEY RESULT AREAS/ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
• Provide leadership to ensure that all Geology & Diamond Drill personnel adhere to safety standards that exceed industry practice and any applicable legislative provisions.
• Ensure the achievement of agreed targets for the department in terms of :
• Budgeted costs
• Budget grade control targets

• Delineation of and reporting of resources
• Effectively train and develop Tanzanian Geologists

• Ensure all data & documentation required to support & validate the Bulyanhulu resource (& it’s method of calculation) is kept in a logical & systematic manner.
• Ensure that the resource figures are routinely reconciled with mine & mill production in order to ensure that the resource estimate is continually improved.
• Professional leadership and technical support to the geology team. Development and implementation of effective training and mentoring programmes.
• Develop, implement and monitor systems to ensure geology and assay databases are complete, accurate and accessible.
• Ensure timely and accurate geology inputs to facilitate the preparation of mine plans.
• Continually review every aspect of departmental operations to identify and implement opportunities to add value to the operation & company
• Create a work climate, which ensures that all activities and processes in the geology department (reserve definition and estimation, grade control sampling and ore recovery, prediction of mining tonnes and grades) are constantly reviewed and continually improved.
• Participate in the senior management team of BGML to ensure that company targets for resource exploitation, capital management, cost control, safe working, employee development environmental management performance and corporate governance are achieved.

PROFESSIONAL SKILLS
Education Requirements: • Bachelor of Applied Science, majoring in Geology. Preference will be given to Honours graduates.

Experience Requirements:
• A Minimum of 10 years of mineral resource evaluation & generation experience in an operational underground mining environment, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.
• A significant portion of this experience will have been spent within precious metal mines, where a variety of mining techniques, including narrow vein conventional, mining are utilised.
• The incumbent should be familiar with the practice of estimation within deposits of a ‘nuggety’ nature & ideally be regarded as a ‘Competent Person’ in resource and reserve estimation for this deposit style
• Strong modeling, geo-statistical & grade estimation skills
• Intermediate to Advanced Datamine skills
• Clear and concise communicator – both written & verbally
• Supervisory experience is essential
• Diamond drilling techniques, including exposure to semi-directional &/or directional drilling

    BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION
    Maintains, overhauls, and repair office and household appliances, and other office machines. Performs a combination of journeyman level and semi-skilled tasks in the maintenance and repair of buildings and equipment. Performs full journeyman level skilled and semi-skilled work in other maintenance related areas such as electrical systems, cooling systems and all controls systems. Performs skilled Journey man Electrical work for 125 USG owned/leased residences. Identifies Spare Parts, Materials Items and equipment which must be repaired or replaced. Places orders into Procurement System. Must be able to trouble shoot Automatic Transfer Switch printed circuit boards, and must be able to work on Automatic Voltage Regulation printed circuit equipment and electronic components. Must be thoroughly capable of interpreting detailed electronic and electrical diagrams and diagnostic capacity must be extremely elevated.

    MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
    Performs skilled journeyman level maintenance and repair of household appliances, washers, dryers, dishwashers, distillers, other type machines, and office machines. Determines extent and nature of work to be done from work order, supervisory instructions, trouble call, or by diagnostic tests. Runs new wiring, installs outlets, switches and plugs. Trouble shoots existing equipment and repairs. Will perform work on air-conditioners control circuit boards and refrigerators circuit broads of a very high technical nature. Disassembles machine to extent necessary and adjusts, repairs, or replaces defective parts, using hand tools and sometimes very high level electronic device testing equipment. . Overhauls machines, replacing parts as necessary to insure new machine condition. May use electrical testing instruments and other equipment in diagnosing problems. May fabricate parts when not in stock, operating engine lathe, drill press, and grinding and buffing equipment, and using micrometers and other precision measuring to insure parts are of correct dimensions. May perform repairs on site as well as in the shop. Periodically inspects, cleans, oils, and adjusts all machines for which responsible. Provides information for ordering parts that needed for appliances repair.

    Must be able to wire Automatic Transfer Switches and must be able to work on Automatic Voltage Regulation equipment. Must be proficient in installation of new electrical distribution systems up to and including 5,000 amp capacity with all associated safety controls. Must be thoroughly capable of interpreting detailed electrical diagrams and diagnostic capacity must be extremely elevated.

    Performs regularly scheduled maintenance activities on all electronic equipment Distribution Networks and appliances. Documents all results and recommends findings. Recommends replacements and upgrades on electrical systems. Must be able and component to work on all types of industrial and residential appliances.

    Performs job activities and duties in a safe responsible manner to avoid the creation of safety or health hazards; confirms to established safety and health policies and procedures; properly utilized appropriate personal protection equipment as required by the job activity; informs supervisor of all accidents, illnesses and injuries; promptly reports unsafe or hazardous conditions.

    QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

    The US Embassy is seeking an individual for the position of Local Guard Coordinator in the Regional Security Office (RSO).

    BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION
    Incumbent is responsible for the first -line management and supervision of the local guard contract. As directed by the Regional Security Officer (RSO), the Local Guard Coordinator (LGC) is responsible for development of the Local Guard (LG) components of the facility defense and reaction plans for the following facilities; NEC, CDC, Peace Corps, Mission Residences and the off-site warehouse; for daily management and oversight of the guard personnel and resources; for assisting in coordinating security planning and execution of drills with facility and residential security personnel; assisting with the development of security logistics and financial planning; assisting the RSO and DSC with guard contract administration; contractor monitoring and performance oversight; and for providing and/or monitoring the local guard training program.

    MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

    • Daily oversight of guard performance and supervision of guards including oversight of contractor's obligations to adhere to contract goals and performance standards and recommending deductions when deficiencies occur.
    • Maintain contact with guard management for oversight of contract including ensuring all personnel are accounted for and in their designated posts at the appropriate times, and ensuring accurate and timely reporting and documentation associated with the contract.
    • Provide management advice to RSO and DSC regarding guard positions, requirements for guards at various locations and possible improvements in process or operations.
    • Recommend updates to the contract to ensure accurate representation.
    • Coordination with FSNI to maintain mid-level contacts with host nation security forces to ensure prompt response of host nation security forces in the event of an emergency.
    • Attend professional meetings and review relevant published materials.
    QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED

    Skills and Abilities: The work requires keen analytical abilities, originality of ideas, creative solutions, and the exercise of sound, independent judgment, must be able to make independent judgments on institutional capabilities and the adequacy of security systems and controls. Writing skills encompass critical analysis of defensive operations, the preparation of complex reports and plans, preparing written justification statements for the residential security program budgets, drafting requests for work order requests or services and answering and preparing guidance about program performance, funding, or other issues. Must be able to collect and present facts and recommendations in a clear, concise manner. Computer skills are required.

    PLUMBER POST

    The US Embassy is seeking an individual for the position of Plumber in Facilities Maintenance Section.

    BASIC FUNCTION OF POSITION


    Performs highly skilled plumbing installation, troubleshooting and repair work for all US Government properties.

    MAJOR DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES


    Installs and maintains large industrial electric and solar water heaters, installs and maintains large water treatment facilities from engineering drawings, installs and maintains large waste water treatment facilities, installs troubleshoots and repairs underground pipe connections up to 10 inches or 250 MM in diameter, installs copper pipes, CPC pipes, UPVC pipes, Galvanized pipes, Cast Iron pipes, ductile iron pipes, and all pressure pumps up to 250 horsepower. All connections must be able to withstand 6 bar minimal pressure. Estimates, plans and schedules all jobs by examining assigned work, estimating total materials necessity, making materials requests and ascertaining that total required materials have been issued by the warehouse personnel prior to starting project or task. Examines instructions and in conjunction with Supervisor determines work priorities. Maintains, repairs and fits all types of plumbing equipment including pressure pumps, water tanks, piping distribution systems, lavatories, sinks, showers, clothes washing machines, cisterns and bathtubs at all Mission residences and NEC.10%

    Works with masons to fit all necessary piping.10%

    Maintains records of all materials used on site. Works from blueprints and drawings as necessary.5%

    Assists in maintaining Reverse Osmosis, Water Storage Tanks, Tank Farms, Sewage Effluent Lift Stations, Grease Traps, Storm Drainage System, underground fuel systems, and wastewater plants no matter where on USG property they are located. . Conduct plumbing PM. Coordinates with water supply authority when necessary. 5%

    Carry out all other duties as tasked by Maintenance Foreman, Maintenance Supervisor and American Supervisor.

    Performs job activities and duties in a responsible manner to avoid the creation of safety or health hazards; Conforms to established safety and health policies and procedures; properly utilizes appropriate personal protective equipment as required by job activity; informs supervisor of all accidents, illnesses and injuries; promptly reports unsafe or hazardous conditions.

     
    QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED


    All applicants must address each selection criterion detailed below with specific and comprehensive information supporting each item.

        Education: Completion of Elementary School (Standard VII) is required. Completion of vocation training or equivalent experience is required.

        Prior Experience: Three years of industrialized type plumbing experience is required. This is not just a residential plumber, must have demonstrated Hotel, Hospital or other large industrial type complex plumbing experience.

        Language Proficiency: Level III (good working knowledge) in English and Level IV (fluent) in Kiswahili (speaking, writing and reading) is required. Must be able to read and comprehend instructions in Verbal and Written English Language . Must be able to read, comprehend and understand complex drawings.

        Knowledge: Must have knowledge in practices and procedures of plumbing and masonry.

        Skills and Abilities: Ability to use all plumbing related hand tools and all plumbing related power tools of the trade engaged in, to include brazing, gas welding, gas cutting, and electric welding. Must have complete ability to trouble shoot on above mentioned plumbing problems. Must have valid driver's license and the ability to safely and regularly drive a GOV Vehicle.

    Programme Objectives
    • The overall objective of the programme is to contribute to capacity building and increased understanding of the importance of wind power and other renewable energy sources among strategic organisations in the participant's home countries.
    • The programme aims at poverty reduction and sustainable development through increased availability of electricity from renewable sources for poor men, women and children.
    • The programme shall provide knowledge and introduce relevant tools and methods for designing, planning and implementing a change project in the energy sector including aspects of gender and public participation.

    The specific objectives of the programme are to provide the participants with:

    • An understanding of the impact of energy supply on global climate change and its importance for planning and development as well as its impact on the environment, poverty reduction and gender issues.
    • Knowledge of the role of wind power in the energy supply as a whole, and its advantages and disadvantages from environmental, economic and technical perspectives.
    • Knowledge and understanding of the entire process of planning, financing, installation, management, maintenance and demounting of a wind power plant.
    • Exchange of knowledge and experience between the participants themselves and between the participants and Swedish actors.
    Contents
    CHANGE PROJECT

    A central component of the programme is the participant's own Change Project addressing a relevant problem within the scope of the programme. The Change Project should be something the participant and his/her organization want to implement during the period of the programme. An outline of a proposed Change Project (or a project idea) is to be submitted together with the application form. It will form part of the basis for selection of participants to the programme.
    The project should be endorsed by the participant's organisation.
    Candidates from the same country and/or same organization are welcome to submit a joint project proposal.
     MODULES
    The programme is divided into five interlinked modules:
    1. Sustainable Energy Systems
    The module covers central issues for the establishment of a smart and sustainable electric system and introduces various renewable energy sources and their environmental impact, costs etc.
    2. Wind Power - Basic Knowledge
    The module will in detail present methods of central importance in developing wind power plants such as wind measurement, localisation and design, demands on the infrastructure and the electric grid etc.
    3. Planning and Decision Making Processes for Establishing Wind Power Plants
    The module covers areas as environmental impact analysis, stakeholder participation and other key areas for efficient planning and decision making.
    4. Management, Organisation and Economy of Winder Power Plants
    The module includes issues as taxes and tariffs, regulations, various organisation models for managing a wind power plant, etc.
    5. Change Project and Processes of Change
    The Change Project plays a central role in the programme and in this module methods such as project management and networking to support a process of change will be introduced.

     
    Programme Structure
    PHASES

    Phase 1 - Preparation

    The participants will get distance support in defining and developing their Change Projects. Interactive modules for web based self studies will be made available on the learning platform in order to provide the participants with basic knowledge in various subject areas.
    Phase 2 - Scheduled Programme in Sweden, 3,5 weeks
    During the training period in Sweden participants will be exposed to Swedish knowledge and experience within renewable energy in general and wind power in particular. Interactive lectures and professional exchange dialogues will be combined with presentations, excursions and study visits.
    Phase 3 - Intermediate Consolidation Phase
    Back in their organisations, participants will continue anchoring and developing their Change Projects in dialogue with colleagues and other stakeholders. Web-based tools for communication will be used for networking, peer review and for interactions with and support from the mentors.
    Phase 4 - Regional Phase, Scheduled Programme, 1,5 weeks
    The regional phase, will take place in India. During this session the participants will report on the progress of their Change Project with feed back from the mentors as well as other participants. Study visits will provide opportunities to learn from local and regional experiences.

     Phase 5 - Continued Support Phase
    Through the web there will be ongoing interaction between participants, their institutions and the mentors. During this phase the Change Projects will be implemented, evaluated and reported on.
     
    TIMETABLE
    • The total duration of the programme is 15 months (phase 1-5) out of which 5 weeks are scheduled sessions.
    • The training component in Sweden will take place September 9 - October 3, 2013. The programme will be held in Karlstad and Stockholm with a study tour to Malmö and Falkenberg.
    • The regional session will be held in the southern part of India in February - March 2014.
     LEARNING PROCESSES
    The programme includes a diversity of pedagogical methods such as lectures, group works, forum discussions, case studies, study visits, mentor support and extensive use of ICT. Planning, implementation and evaluation of the Change Project will provide continuity to the programme over the 15 months.

    MANAGEMENT AND STAFF
    The training programme is carried out under the management of LIFE Academy, Karlstad, in cooperation with the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH), Stockholm, and Favonius, Falkenberg.
    Admission Requirements
    The countries invited with first priority to this programme are:
    Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mocambique, Indonesia, Mongolia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, Moldova and Ukraine.
    However the programme is also open for other countries with potential for and a wish to develop wind power.
     
    TARGET GROUP
    The programme is primarily intended for decision makers, planners, trainers, managers and specialists in a position to initiate and implement changes within the energy sector in their country. Candidates representing government organisations, private companies or NGOs at national or local level are welcome to apply. The candidates should hold an academic degree or having equivalent knowledge and have at least five years of professional working experience. To achieve a good gender balance, applications from qualified women are especially welcome.
    Candidates who have earlier participated in a Sida sponsored training program cannot apply for this program.
     
    LANGUAGE REQUIREMENTS
    The training programme will be organised and conducted in English and consequently high proficiency in the English
    language is required. Candidates from countries where English is not an official language should do a language test with an official body in the home country, unless other documentation to support for her/his ability can be provided. Proficiency in English shall be certified on the Application form.
     
    HEALTH REQUIREMENTS
    Considering the training programme consists of international travels and work away from home in a new environment, good health and full working capacity is conditioned. It is therefore recommended that candidates undergo a medical examination before filling in the Medical Statement in the Application form.
     
     OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    Nominations are assessed on individual and organizational merits. 25 participants will be selected to the programme taking into account that the participants in the group should represent a variety of actors, backgrounds and professional qualifications.
    The outline of the Change Project together with the commitment of the home organization to support the participant and actively involve in the implementation of the project will be of crucial importance in the selection of participants.
    If selected, the participants are required to attend all scheduled parts of the programme and a Letter of Commitment is to be signed by the nominating organization before the start of the programme.
    Due to the character of the programme, family members are not allowed to accompany participants to the programme.
     
    COSTS
    Sida will cover all training cost such as lectures, literature, documentation, study tours and certain social activities as well as accommodation and food. International travel costs to the regional session in phase 4 will be covered by Sida.
    International travel costs to and from Karlstad, Sweden in phase 2 and costs for personal expenses are not included and is the responsibility of the participant or his/her organization.

    Application Process
    Application is to be made on the special form attached and include a recent photograph and all required information and documents. The applicant must be nominated by her/his organization or institution. When necessary, the application is to be approved by the official nominating authority in the country. The application is to be submitted to the nearest Swedish Embassy/ Consulate. If there is no Swedish Embassy/Consulate in the applicant´s country, the application should be sent directly to the Programme Secretariat. Selected applicants will be notified by e-mail.
     
    VISA
    Participants are responsible for obtaining all visas necessary during all phases of the programme. The visa should be valid for the whole period of the programme and the passport should be valid for three months longer than the entry visa. The costs for obtaining visas are carried by the participant.

    INSURANCE
    All participants are covered by a group insurance while on scheduled parts of the programme.
