The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) is the United Nations systems

designated entity for addressing environmental issues at the global and regional level. Its

mandate is to coordinate the development of environmental policy consensus by keeping the

global environment under review and bringing emerging issues to the attention of

governments and the international community for action. UNEP's Division of Environmental

Policy Implementation (DEPI) works with international and national partners, providing

technical assistance and advisory services for the implementation of environmental policy,

and strengthening the environmental management capacity of developing countries and

countries with economies in transition. This post is located in UNEP/DEPI at the Nairobi

duty station. Under the day to day supervision of the Senior Forest and Climate Change

Programme Officer, in close cooperation with the terrestrial ecosystems staff of the Fresh

Water & Terrestrial Ecosystems Branch (FTEB), and overall supervision of the Deputy

Director of Division of Environmental Policy Implementation (DEPI) the incumbent will

carry out the following duties:
Responsibilities

1. Assist the Forest and Climate Change Senior Programme Officer in operationalizing and

implementing the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD+)

Programme; Provide operational and substantive assistance to stakeholder dialogue

facilitation at both national and international level; Contribute to Forestry Policy Analysis and

REDD Policy Dialogue by searching and compiling relevant information and data on carbon

market and financing, forestry sequestration, REDD pilot modelling and the possible strategy

options to reduce deforestation, and carry out preliminary data analysis from available

statistical and case studies; Providing scientific assistance on technical issues as methodology,

baseline setting, carbon modelling, monitoring, developing REDD national strategies and

governance, data set adjustment, contributing to data reference on carbon quality figure ,

emission from forestry sector update including tracking the progress of Government

submissions to Subsidiary Body on Scientific and Technical Advice(SBSTA) (of the UN

Framework Convention on Climate Change) or other international agreement on

REDD;Compile forest/climate stakeholder maps, including assisting following with other

international agencies and appointed national officials for REDD concept dissemination;

Provide substantive input to background information documents and stakeholder analysis;

Provide operational assistance to workshops and meetings, participants, preparation of

documents and presentation and communications; Facilitate consultation with relevant

partners such as government departments, regional organizations and civil society by

following up on agreements, documenting events and dissemination of documentation;

Participate in the implementation of activities outlined in UN-REDD international and

national programme documents; Assist in the development of UN-REDD communication

materials, including identification of standardized terminology, concepts and references;

Updating of REDD database; Perform any other relevant duties assigned.
Competencies

Professionalism: A clear understanding of sustainable forest management, with a specific

view to the linkages between REDD+ and biodiversity. Ability to carry out scientific

background research and literature review; analyse relevant scientific literature and compile

concise documents based on large amounts of information. Understanding of the functions

and organization the United Nations and UNEP. Shows pride in work and in achievements;

effectively, in particular the ability to express complex scientific issues in clear terms for a

coordinate long-term and complex projects such as large publications.
Education

Advanced University degree (Master's degree or equivalent) in environmental studies,

forestry, agronomy or other relevant field is required. A first level university degree in

combination with qualifying experience may be accepted in lieu of the advanced university

degree.
Work Experience

A minimum of two years of progressively responsible experience in areas related to forest

management, biodiversity conservation, and climate change, preferably with at least 1 year

working in an international context. Experience in the United Nations would be an asset.
Languages

English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post

advertised, fluency in oral and written English is required. Working knowledge of French is

desirable. Knowledge of another UN language is desirable.
Assessment Method

Evaluation of qualified candidates for this position may include a substantive assessment

which may be followed by a competency-based interview.
