Background:
The International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) invites applications for the position of Driver/Field Assistant. This position is funded by the African Development Bank (AfDB) under the Multinational-CGIAR Project on Support to Agricultural Research for development of Strategic Crops in Africa (SARD-SC).
IITA is an international non-profit research-for-development (R4D) organization created in 1967, governed by a Board of Trustees, and supported primarily by the Consultative Group of International Agricultural Research (CGIAR). Our R4D is anchored on the development needs of sub-Saharan Africa. We develop agricultural solutions with our partners to tackle hunger and poverty by reducing producer and consumer risks, enhancing crop quality and productivity, and generating wealth from agriculture. Position/Responsibilities
The Driver/Field Assistant will work as a member of the SARD-SC 'project team in Tanzania. Under the general supervision of the Project Coordinator, the nationally recruited staff (NRS) will:
Drive official vehicles in a safe and courteous manner on local and international routes as required, at all times using defensive driving techniques.
Perform daily check of vehicle oil, water, tire pressure and other fluids, and verify safe condition of vehicle before departure on travel. Verify completeness of tool kit, first aid kit, spare tire, etc, daily
Perform necessary cleaning and washing of the assigned vehicle on a weekly basis.
Perform emergency repairs and maintenance as needed.
Assist with loading and unloading of vehicle as needed Maintain vehicle use log of all travel.
Provide timely advice to the transport office-of any vehicle requiring maintenance services.
Act as field assistant in collecting data when travelling with scientists and technicians in the filed
Perform other related duties as required.
Qualifications:
The candidate must possess at least category B & D driving licence
Must possess at least a form four certificate; a pass in mathematics and a science subject, and knowledge of computer applications (MS Word and Excel) will be an added advantage.

Able to work under minimal supervision and be proactive.
Should be honest, flexible, enthusiastic and committed to work
Be able to work in a multi-cultural and multi-national environment.
Good organization and planning skills with effective time management skills.
Be able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously and work under pressure with a wide range individuals and institutions.
Able to maintain confidentiality at all times.
General information: Initial appointment is for two years. Subsequent renewal of the contract will be decided based on research outputs and productivity, and continued need for the position. IITA offers a competitive remuneration package.
