The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in
Tanzania is supporting the Ministry of Livestock and Fisheries in
Zanzibar in the Project TCP/URT/3401 "Support to Aquaculture Subsector
of Zanzibar", The project objective is to foster investment in
aquaculture and promote an effectively governed aquaculture development
that is socially inclusive, equitable and environmentally responsible,
and which provides opportunities for sustainable and profitable aqua
farming as well as the economic activities that grow around it. The
expected outcomes are three-fold: the implementation of a national
aquaculture strategy for better management of aquaculture activities in
Zanzibar; development of ecologically and socio-economically responsible
forms of aquaculture that can be profitably adopted by Zanzibari
farmers and investors; and development of appropriate business models
that will enable Zanzibari farmers/investors to explore market options.
and increase the knowledge of aqua-business management skills, These
will be achieved through four linked outputs: .
A National Aquaculture Development Strategy and Action Plan;
A resource map of the aquaculture potential of Zanzibar;
Organized and empowered farmer groups employing improved market and business planning and management; and
An investment guide for public investment in the development of the
aquaculture subsector and private investment in aquaculture production.
The project invites applications from competent and qualified
Tanzanians to fill the following positions that exist in the project:
National Consultants
1.3 Environment specialist
Under the overall supervision of FAO Representation, the technical
supervision of the FAO Regional Aquaculture Officer, the Aquaculture
Officer of FIRA and the Aquaculture Economist of the Development
Planning Service (FIEP), and in close collaboration with the Department
of Marine Resources and the National Project Coordinator, the national
Environment consultant will:
Develop the training materials for EIA, SEA EM and GIS, with technical
advice from the FAO experts Organize and serve as resource person in the
training Courses
Responsible for the development of the Aquaculture Resource Map
Assist in the 'development of the Zanzibar Aquaculture Development Strategy and Plan
Qualifications: Masters Degree in Environmental Science or related
field. 7 Years experience in environmental research, assessments, and
planning. Duty Station: Zanzibar Duration: 8 months
