Call for Nominations

Call for Nominations:
 Civil society speaker in the 10 December
United Nations event to launch
the International Decade for People of African Descent


Dear Colleagues,

At the request of the Office of the President of the General Assembly (OPGA), the  UN Non-Governmental Liaison Service (UN-NGLS) is conducting an open process to obtain nominations for a civil society speaker in the UN event to officially launch the International Decade for People of African Descent, which will take place at UN Headquarters in New York on Human Rights Day, 10 December from 3:00-6:00pm. Criteria for candidates for this role are outlined in Section A below. The individual selected will receive travel funding.

Anyone may submit nominations. Please read this entire email if you will participate in this process, as it has a few steps and specific requirements.

Kindly note: this nomination process is not open to candidates from the private corporate sector.

Please consider these documents when deciding upon candidates to nominate: 
1) the concept note for the event.
2) the provisional programme for the event.


A. Criteria for Candidates 


Before submitting a nominee, please confirm the candidate:

1) is a person of African descent.
2) is a representative of a civil society organization, officially authorized to speak on behalf of the organization.
3) has a proven track record of effective work to promote respect, protection and fulfilment of human rights and fundamental freedoms for people of African descent.
4) is familiar with the  Durban Declaration and Programme of Action.
5) has experience with presenting human rights issues in public fora, and a demonstrated ability to engage constructively with a variety of stakeholders.
6) is a compelling public speaker (the online nomination form requests links to writing samples or remarks delivered at speaking engagements).
7) is available to be at UN Headquarters in New York by 8:30am on 10 December, and for travel to and from New York if necessary.
8) possesses a Visa for travel to the United States, or is able to obtain one within a week of notification of selection. The Office of the President of the General Assembly will provide an invitation letter to the selected candidate to support a Visa application.
