The African Medical and Research Foundation (AMREF) is an independent, non-profit, non-governmental organization (NGO) whose mission is "to improve the health of disadvantaged people in Africa as a means for them to escape poverty and improve the quality of their lives". AMREF has over 800 employees throughout Africa with its headquarters in Nairobi, Kenya.

AMREF Tanzania with support from the Foreign Affairs, Trade and Development Canada is implementing a three and a half-year Maternal and Newborn Child Health (MNCH) project in Simiyu Region. The aim of project is to accelerate efforts to improve maternal newborn and child health in Simiyu by building a replicable model that strengthens formal health systems and community health system interfaces in a comprehensive and integrated manner. This model aims at improving MNCH indicators in the five districts of Simiyu region (namely Bariadi, Meatu, Maswa, Busega and Itilima districts). The ultimate beneficiaries are the communities who will have access to better health care with better-informed and skilled health care providers.

AMREF is therefore seeking to recruit highly qualified, experienced and motivated individuals to fill the position:-

Job Objectives
To provide strategic direction, oversight and leadership to the Maternal, Newborn and Child Health (MNCH) programme within AMREF project in Simiyu that is consistent with National standards, guidelines and policies.

Key Responsibilities:


  • Participate actively in relevant efforts and forums addressing MNCH in the lake zone Tanzania and beyond
  • Work closely with partners, ministry of health and social welfare and other relevant ministries and stakeholders in sharing and dialoguing along the identified project strategic components in addressing MNCH issues
  • Generate pragmatic and evidence-based initiatives for bridging the existing gap between
  • MNCH community needs and access to health care system
  • Actively contribute in strengthening AMREF MNCH portfolio
  • Remain a team leader and providing guidance to programme staff.
  • Direct line manager and technical leader to project manager; programme analyst; and other project support staff.
  • Provide guidance on timely compilation of projects reports and facilitating prompt submission to senior management in AMREF, MoHSW, and to CIDA.
  • In liaison with Tanzania SMT, National Offices and technical teams, participate in identification of opportunities for new programme development and write concept papers and proposals consistent with Government of Tanzania priorities and AMREF strategic directions.
  • Regularly searching for new information and research findings in MNCH issues, and other related issues and applying knowledge to enhance performance
  • Provide guidance to the team in identifying areas for operational research for MNCH issues
  • Guide and lead the team in documenting lessons learnt for programme development and scale-up, and disseminating knowledge and best practices in meetings and journals
  • Oversee the overall programme budget management including quali!X partnership with sub-grantees.    
  • Manage staff performance and development


Qualifications and Experience:

  • MD with Masters Degree in public health, reproductive health, clinical medicine or related field.
  • Sound experience in working maternal and child health interventions of not less than five (5) years.
  • Excellent project planning and proposal writing skills.
  • Strong team leader and player skills
  • Excellent in programme management
  • Excellent presentation, communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent networking and organizational skills
  • Track history and clear understanding of health systems and local government structures and CSOs
  • Basic principles and practices related to the management of health care delivery systems
  • Three or more years of experience in implementing MNCH interventions
